The Harmoneers were organized in the early 1940's by Fred C. Maples. They signed a recording contract with RCA Victor. The members of the group at that time were Herbert Newman, Paul Stringfellow, Fred C. Maples, Sidney Braden and Charles Key.
During the years, the group experienced
several personnel changes. Following artists once were members of The
Harmoneers :
The Harmoneers released several recordings as the "Maple Leaf Quartet" on the 'Quartet' label of Lee Roy Abernathy. This name change was a result of their exclusive recording contract with RCA Victor.
In the 40's and 50's, The Harmoneers became one of the top quartets in the USA. The first long playing album, "This little light of mine", was released on the Sing label in 1959. Prior to this, eight RCA recordings by The Harmoneers were released on a 10" album titled "Church in the wildwood".
The Harmoneers retired in the early 1960's. They received the 'Living Legend' award at the 1995 Grand Ole Gospel Reunion in Greenville, SC. They are inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and won the Mary Tellent 'Pioneer Award'.
